That gap in published limits is itself useful information. When a vendor publishes plan prices but not plan caps, you cannot model your monthly cost in advance, and you find out where the ceiling is by hitting it during a deadline.

The API angle, if your research is repeatable

If the same research runs every week, doing it by hand in a chat window is the expensive option. Feeding documents through the API and getting structured output back is usually cheaper, and here the per-token prices are close enough to compare directly.

Three practical reads from that table.

Sonnet 5 got cheaper by not getting more expensive. Honest cons, on both sides

Nobody at The Tool Signal has enterprise seats on both platforms, and this section is deliberately about what the published information does not cover.

Con one: neither vendor publishes usable message limits on the standard tier. For ChatGPT Plus, the specific usage caps and context limits are not stated on OpenAI's own pricing page. Claude publishes its Max tiers as multiples of Pro (5x and 20x), which tells you the ratio but not the base. You cannot compute "how many 90-page PDFs a month" from either. Plan for the possibility that your $20 plan runs out mid-project.

Con two: the feature packaging moves faster than anyone's article. ChatGPT Go was announced in January 2026 and had wider international availability by mid-2026, according to a pricing tracker checked that June. The Claude tier list picked up several named products during 2026. Any comparison you read, including this one, is a snapshot with a date on it, and the date matters more than the verdict.

Con three: the free tiers are not free in the same way. Who should not buy either subscription
